Lanzarote´s Leading Holiday Resorts
March 4th, 2010
Thinking of booking a holiday in Lanzarote this summer? Hundreds of thousnds of tourists from the UK and Eire will be doing so as this small Canary Island is a very popular vacation destination. And little wonder as it is home to some lovely beaches, great hotels and incredible scenery.
Lanzarote is located close to the Tropic of Cancer in the Atlantic Ocean and is one of the seven Canary Islands, an autonomous region of Spain. Which also counts well-known islands such as Tenerife and Gran Canaria as part of their number.
There are many different types of accommodation in Lanzarote for anyone visiting the island for the first time. Ranging from simple studios through to luxury hotels. And plenty of private rental accommodation too – as this is a major growth area. As demand for villas and apartments in Lanzarote has soared in recent years thanks to the Internet, which enables tourists to book their own accommodation direct online.
Puerto del Carmen is the oldest resort – located in the centre of the island close to the airport. As recently as the 1960´s this was still a small fishing port called La Tiñosa, but today it has expanded enormously into a large resort which now encompasses the neighbouring districts of Los Pocillos and Matagorda too.
Puerto del Carmen is best known for its beaches and nightlife. By day life revolves around some great stretches of sand such as Playa Grande. Whilst by night the heart of the action is Centro – which as the name suggests is centrally located in the resorts main seafront strip the Avenida de las Playas.
Playa Blanca is the second largest resort on the island and has expanded over the last five years especially. Offering good value hotel and villa accommodation as well as great weather and fantastic views of the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura. Accommodation here is very keenly priced and as a result visitors can book villas in Playa Blanca more cheaply than in other parts of the island.
Costa Teguise is located towards the northern end of the island and consequently doesn’t enjoy such great weather during the winter months. But it is on the other hand well located for exploring key attractions and sights such as the Jameos del Agua and the Cactus Garden.
Lanzarote is also home to a smaller fourth resort – Puerto Calero. Which is a luxury marina located just five minutes drive from Puerto del Carmen. With accommodation available in a small handful of villas and two hotels.
